Saves, guests and syncing
Where your progress lives, what happens when you sign in, and how to move a save

As a guest
Play without an account and your progress is stored in your browser, on your device. It survives closing the tab and restarting the machine. It does not survive clearing site data, using a private window, or moving to another device.
Nothing about a guest save is sent to the server. There is no shadow account and no identifier following you around.
With an account
Sign in and your progress is kept on the server. Every action you take is applied there, so the save is the same whichever device you open it on, and there is nothing to press.
An account also records achievements, lets you opt into the rankings, and lets you export or delete everything held about you at any time.
Moving a guest save into an account
The first time you sign in on a device that has a guest save, the game asks what to do with it. It does not decide for you and it does not upload anything silently.
- Upload it and the guest save becomes your account save. If your account already has progress, you are shown both — chapter, room and time played — and you choose which to keep.
- Keep it local and the guest save stays in the browser untouched, and you carry on with the account save.
Neither option destroys the other one immediately. The replaced save stays recoverable from Account → Saves for thirty days.
Why the server holds the state
Every consequential action in this game is applied on the server: a puzzle solved, an evidence connection made, an achievement earned, an ending reached. The browser never awards anything to itself.
That is partly to make the rankings mean something, and partly because it makes the save robust. If a tab crashes halfway through a puzzle, the server already knows what you had done up to the last action, and you resume there rather than at the last checkpoint.
Starting over
Account → Saves has a restart control for each chapter. It asks once, plainly, and tells you what will be lost before you confirm. Achievements you have already earned are kept; a restart is not a punishment.
